Clayton Fire Department's Meet Us Monthly Feature - January 2025

Home Posted on January 06, 2025

It is the first Monday of January, and we are kicking off the year by recognizing a dedicated member of our team during #MeetUsMonthly.

Russell Overly, a Master Firefighter with the Clayton Fire Department, has been on the job for just a few weeks, getting settled and familiar with his new role. As a Master Firefighter, Overly operates apparatus across the department during the absence of the assigned Fire Equipment Operator. He’s assigned to Rescue One at Station Two where he’s already become an invaluable member of the team. His background makes him a unique asset to the department.

Originally from Washington, D.C., Overly grew up in Virginia before moving to North Carolina in 1997. After finishing high school in Raleigh, he pursued a career in the defense industry where he worked for 15 years. However, in 2020, following the challenges of COVID-19, he made a life-changing decision and entered the fire service.

He offers a bit of wisdom for those considering a career in fire service: "Listen to your teachers, and they will help you not get hurt." He emphasizes that while some instructors may have unique styles, all are dedicated to teaching and ensuring safety on the job.

When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Overly says, "Just being able to help those who need us." He’s found a deep sense of fulfillment in being able to serve others and contribute to his community.

Outside of work, Overly has a love for the outdoors. He enjoys scuba diving, long-range shooting, camping, and hiking.

We are grateful to have Overly as part of our team, and we look forward to the impact he will continue to make in the Clayton community.
