Municipal Park Groundbreaking

GROUND BREAKING

Clayton residents will soon see the beginning stages of construction on the new Municipal Park in Downtown Clayton.

Municipal Park, located at 325 McCullers St., is the Town’s first and oldest park, with many of its current features dating back to the early 1980s. The new upgrades are part of the $18 million Parks Bond that passed in November 2019.

“When everything shutdown last year because of COVID-19, that had a major impact on the Town’s plans to renovate our parks.” said Parks and Recreation Director Scott Barnard. “We are thrilled the construction of this project is finally underway. By next summer, Municipal Park will be the place to be in Clayton.”

The new park plans to feature a splash pad, new playground, basketball court, picnic shelters, restrooms, and a community stage with large green space. Final details on all the park amenities will be decided at a special session Clayton Town Council meeting on Nov. 10.

Demolition of the old park will begin on Monday, Nov. 1 and will last approximately three weeks. Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov. 22, and the park is expected to reopen Summer 2022.

The entire park and the parking lot will be closed as of Nov. 1 and will not be accessible to the public until the park reopens next summer. Residents can also expect intermittent road closures on the surrounding streets, McCullers Street and Kilgo Street. Specifics on street closures and project updates will be shared on the Town’s website and social media channels.
