Major renovations are officially underway at the 65-acre East Clayton Community Park.

The park will receive $6.2 Million in upgrades including two lighted artificial turf fields, expanded parking, and accessibility improvements as part of the $18 million Parks Bond that passed in November 2019.

The Town commemorated the beginning of the project with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 3.

Clayton Mayor Jody McLeod said he is enthusiastic about the project and what it will mean for the Town.

“We are excited to be where we are today. This park is the result of great teamwork and great vision,” said Mayor McLeod. “I know these improvements will benefit all the citizens of Clayton and make East Clayton Community Park the premiere location in Johnston County for soccer, football, lacrosse, and rugby. It will also serve as the inaugural home of the Clayton Clovers semi-pro baseball team.”

The project is being managed by the Town’s Engineering Department. McAdams created the park’s new design, and J.M. Thompson is handling the renovations.

“The improvements to the sidewalks, parking lot, and fields will serve both a local and regional need,” said Clayton Parks and Recreation Director Scott Barnard. “Our emerging partnership with the Clovers is an example of just that.”

Interim Town Manager, Rich Cappola, said he is grateful for the direction and leadership the project has received from the Town Council, the Recreation Advisory Board, and the Town of Clayton staff.

East Clayton Community Park, located at 1774 Glen Laurel Road, opened in 2013. This facility currently features a picnic pavilion, soccer fields, multipurpose playing fields, a baseball field, a batting cage, an 18-hole disc golf course, a one-mile trail, and an inclusive playground.

The renovations are estimated to be completed by late summer 2022.
