The Town of Clayton is moving forward with an exciting upgrade at Donald “Clyde” Sinclair Park (400 East Front Street). The playground replacement follows a comprehensive review of park facilities to prioritize upgrades where they are most needed.
During its meeting on Monday, August 18, Town Council approved funding to replace the park’s playground, the oldest in Clayton’s park system. The Donald “Clyde” Sinclair Park Playground Replacement Project is funded through the Town’s Parks General Obligation (GO) Bond with a total investment of just under $300,000. This funding allows the project to deliver a modern, safe, and long-lasting playground for community members of all ages.
“This project goes beyond replacing equipment,” said Town Manager Rich Cappola. “It creates a safe and welcoming space where families can gather, children can grow, and the community can come together. By investing in our parks, we strengthen the heart of Clayton and encourage healthy activity, outdoor play, and lasting connections.”
The new playground will include a play structure for older children ages 5-12, a separate area for younger children ages 2-5, updated swings, and a modern safety surface designed to replace the existing mulch. Accessibility features are included to make sure more children can safely enjoy the playground.
Playground equipment has already been ordered, and installation is expected to begin in late fall or early winter, once delivery and scheduling are finalized. During construction, the playground area will be closed, but the park’s basketball court and restrooms will remain open to the public.
“This is an exciting step forward for our parks system,” said Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Todd Riddick. “Parks are woven into the fabric of our neighborhoods, and the new playground at Donald “Clyde” Sinclair Park will enrich the surrounding community and serve as a lasting resource that enhances the daily lives of residents.”
Over the years, Donald “Clyde” Sinclair Park has seen other important improvements, including the resurfacing of the basketball court in 2022 and restroom updates completed in 2011. The playground replacement continues this trend of maintaining and enhancing public spaces for the benefit of the community.
